Grandma Handmade Noodle Bak Kut Teh has been established in Kuching for sometime, famous for its pan mee and bak kut teh. This place's location is quite hidden. Despite of its hidden location, people still able to discover the good food here. I have not been here for years, mainly because its location is not so convenient to visit. Depart from my house, I would have to drive all the way to Wisma Saberkas traffic lights and make an U-turn to reach here.




The menu, other than pan mee and bak kut teh, they have ala carte dishes too. A good place for lunch and dinner.




Pan mee, fish meat bee hoon soup, and hotplate menu. The pictures of hotplate noodle and rice look so mouth-watering too.




Bak kut teh menu. Bak kut teh for 1 person RM8.50, you can choose 3 ingredients. They have dry bak kut teh and pork trotter in black vinegar too.

My bro's bak kut teh. I didn't manage to have a sip of the soup.. Should be nice as my bro finished all without a drop. I think comparing this with Go Fun Kee's Bak Kut Teh, Grandma's bak kut teh has less herbal taste.




The pan mee. The noodle was thinner, and the texture was rather too soft. I personally prefer the texture of pan mee noodle slightly thicker and harder, it is more chewy that way. So far, my favourite pan mee in Kuching is still the pan mee stall at Good Taste Cafe.

Kolo Mee @SIn Wei Tong Cafe 新会同茶室, Kuching

Location: 9, Leboh Temple, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak (Next to Green Hill Corner, opposite Medan Pelita)


Yesterday randomly picked a cafe for brunch. Was thinking to go to Green Hill Corner, but didn't feel like having beef noodles. Walked a bit further up, saw this coffeeshop had more crowd than I thought. And many of them ordered kolo mee. So I decided to try it out.




Surprisingly the kolo mee tasted not bad too. A bowl of this costs RM3.50. The noodle not overcooked, but I like its minced meat the most. I noticed the non-chinese customers like the kolo mee here too, and quite a number of them asked for red kolo bee hoon (added char siew oil).

I just googled for its address, found out this coffeeshop is actually famous for its charcoal toast. Well, will find a time to have breakfast here next time.

The Kimbap Korean Restaurant @Brighton Square, Kuching

Wasn't plan to have dinner at The Kimbap initially. As we passed by this restaurant, the food aroma was too enticing so we settled our dinner here. It was around time 8:45pm when we walked in. As we sat down snapshotting the menu, the waiter informed us the kitchen would be close at 9pm and asked us to place order fast. But the business hour was stated close at 10pm, it was not even 9pm yet. I rationalised may be they need to take an hour to do kitchen cleaning. Then not more than 5 minutes later, another waiter came to urge us again. I wasn't pleased after the second reminder. I asked if we would have sufficient time to finish our meal or not if the kitchen closed at 9pm. The waiter answered if the order placed before 9pm, then we can stay until we finish our meal.

Oh well, this is the first time I couldn't enjoy browsing the menu. We just picked without long pause, didn't even got time to read the beverage menu section. When the food was served, no time to savour slowly too. I could feel the time pressure. In the end, we managed to leave at 10pm. Though the customer service was good and the waiters politely informed us that the kitchen closing at 9pm. But the memory of being pressed will be long term. I wouldn't want to have late dinner at any of these restaurants at Brighton Square next time.




I snapshot the menu first before browsing it slow. So many choices but we only had so little time to make up our mind.

They have wide range of variety. Looking at the menu, you would be indecisive. But the fried chicken pictures definitely make you mouth-watering. Overall the food was tasted ok but not really impressive.

Uncle Ben's Signature Laksa House @RH Plaza, Kuching

Though I am not a fan of laksa. But when I saw a friend posted a picture of laksa she had in Facebook, it made me drooled. Last Tuesday finally made the move to visit this place for brunch with my bro and future sister-in-law. We spent quite sometime to locate it because friend mentioned it is behind Bella Italia (an Italian restaurant), opposite Swan Teem Seafood Restaurant. In fact, you won't able to spot it from road side because the location is quite hidden. The search is quite difficult because it is blocked by the canopies. If you have been to Hornbill Steamboat at RH Plaza, the laksa house is just right opposite it. This shop is used to be a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, so you can notice there is a conveyor belt in the middle.




The environment is very hygienic. They don't serve pork (but no halal certification) so you can introduce your Muslim friends to come here too.




The Menu. They sell only laksa and Heng Hua noodles.  For laksa menu, you can choose the ingredients. Only egg / chicken / prawn / sea clam / all (large), or all with sea clam. My bro was wanting to have the super big laksa RM48, which the portion suits for 4 - 5 pax. I stopped him because I wanted to have Heng Hua noodle instead of laksa.




Extra menu. They also have salmon laksa.




My Heng Hua noodle. As they don't serve pork, so the meat is replaced with chicken. Though the chicken meat was soft but I still prefer it with 3-layer pork. This reminds me of the Heng Hua noodle I like the most at Ang Cheng Ho. I should visit there again next time.




This is the laksa with egg ingredient only (RM6.00). Though the laksa outside generally costs RM6 per bowl for all ingredients, but this place offers the air-conditioned environment so it is a give and take balance.




The laksa with sea clam RM12.00. This is it that made me drooled. The prawns and sea clams were so fresh! The laksa soup was super savoury as well. Thumbs up! It's worth to visit this place again and again.

P Cafe @Soho West 188, Kuching, Sarawak

The other day a friend of mine in FB posted a photo showing claypot mee with big prawn that looks mouth watering. And most surprisingly the price was only RM8. Claypot prawn mee at RM8, sounds so enticing. Browsing through its Facebook page, they have assorted choices to choose. Laksa, lui cha, chicken rice, kampua, kolo mee, etc. So yesterday we went to this place to give it a try.





The interior looks modern with a blend of old school and factory design.




And, most importantly you can use iPad to place order. 🙀  Oh well, quite uncommon for a restaurant like this.




The menu. The food is more towards Chinese cuisine and local style. I took quite sometime to decide my order because too many choices.

Chicken curry rice, RM6.80. I forgot to take the photo of curry sauce.




Prawn mee, RM9.00. I think they couldn't get the bigger prawns, so it was replaced with smaller prawns. But comparing with the picture in the menu, the mee should be gravy. I was kinda disappointed. Anyhow, the taste was acceptable.




Overall, the food was ok, price is very reasonable. The taste of the food had no thrill, don't think I would have the excitement to go back. Off-topic, don't you think the ambience of this restaurant is more suitable for Western cuisine?

Haunted House Kolo Mee @Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, Kuching

This is not really a haunted house, it's just because of its run-down appearance. My bro has been asking me to go this place together for few times but we didn't have the opportunity until last Tuesday. He had read it somewhere in Facebook, someone gave good reviews on the kolo mee here.

The parking space is limited as it is facing the main road. The opposite is Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, very easy to locate.

We reached there around 10:45am. The vendor showed us a hand signal that the kolo mee sold out already, only kueh tiaw was available. We were ok with it. Ordered kolo kueh tiaw and fried kueh tiaw. The taste of the kolo kueh tiaw was fragrantly good. Can't elaborate more on the kueh tiaw texture because it is unlike noodles which we can distinguish springy or harder.




The fried kueh tiaw. I didn't put high expectation on this plate. Somehow its taste was incredibly good. This kueh tiaw ingredients contained egg, char siew, and bean sprout, stir-fried with dark soy bean sauce. Though simple but it is flavourful enough.




We ordered kiaw soup (dumplings) too. First time I saw a bowl of kiaw soup added bean sprouts. But I like it, more nutritious.

The vendor asked me to come around 7:30am, more variety to choose from. Well, I should try to go early some day to try out its kolo mee. The price is cheap too. 3 person of us, 3 glasses of teh-o bengs, 2 bowls of kolo kueh tiaws, 1 plate of fried kueh tiaw, and 1 bowl of kiaw soup, totalled only RM19.50.

Rising Ramen 雷神拉面 @City One Megamall, Kuching

Rising Ramen has moved to City One Megamall quite sometime ago. Bigger capacity and better environment. Just that I rarely go to this mall even though it is less than 5 minutes drive from my house. The other day bro suggested to have Japanese ramen so we settled our dinner here.





My Miso Ramen. Just the normal size, I think it costs RM11 or RM13? Can't remember. But I remember it's the cheapest in the menu. The broth tasted good as usual, thick and tasty. The noodle was not overcooked, it's the texture I like the most.




My bro asked for Miso Ramen Special. What's the special? Extra char siu meat slices.  You can order add-on for extra noodles or egg too.




Japanese Tempura Udon. I never like udon, so can't give any comment on this.




Salmon sushi roll. The taste was acceptable. But I don't think they used sushi rice and the salmon meat was rather slender. Feel like homemade sushi rolls, not the pro skilled type. The presentation says it all.




I ever tried their minced meat rice before. The portion was small and pricey. Conclusion, I would recommend their ramen menu only. For sushi rolls, it is overpriced for such quality.
