Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa 徳普路真善美砂煲叻沙 @Alexandra Village Food Centre, Singapore

Address: Alexandra Village Food Centre, 120 Bukit Merah Lane 1, #0-75 Singapore 151120
Business hours: Monday - Saturday 9:00am - 4:00pm, closed on Sunday

Last month, travelled to Singapore for a day to visit my friend. She brought me this place for claypot laksa. I had been reluctantly taking laksa for sometime. Especially having laksa in the morning is really too heavy for me.

When it was my turn, I learnt that the stall is one of the Michelin Bib Gourmand Award Winners. Small bowl S$4, medium bowl S$5, and big bowl S$6. Extra noodle / gravy, charge $0.50. Additional ingredients chicken / fish cake / tau pok / prawn, extra charge S$1 and cockle, charge S$2.  It stated "our laksa is spicy".

I ordered the medium size S$5. And, it was really spicy. The gravy was thick and flavourful. The ingredients portion was pretty generous. However, after a few scoops I hardly could finish it.

My friend ordered this seafood soup from 炎記海鲜湯. The soup base was also flavourful, it was really tasty and the prawn was fresh. But. Its taste is unforgettably thick, it will be good to have it once in a while.

My friend's husband ordered this plate from Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies 老半齋燒臘. The dark sauce is a good match to the meat, it's sweet though. The meat was surprisingly tender.

Review: IRVINS's Salted Egg Vs The Golden Duck's Salted Egg

This salted egg thingy has created a hype since last year. When I visited Singapore in January, the salted egg fish skin was all the time "out of stock" at every outlet I passed by. So I only managed to get a pack of IRVIN's salted egg potato chips. My friend bought another competitive brand, "The Golden Duck" for me to do comparison.

A small pack of IRVINS's salted egg potato chips below costs S$8, about RM23.66. It's pricey for me. The packaging itself is nearly a quarter of the cost, I guess. The big pack costs S$16.

Nevertheless the potato chips taste good. The taste is sort of expected. It's potato chips coated with salted egg. The chip has strong aroma of salted egg and curry leaves. It's crispy and every chip is evenly coated with salted egg yolk.

Another brand is The Golden Duck. Slightly cheaper than IRVINS S$7, it's about RM20.70. The packaging designs between the two, IRVINS's more attractive. The Golden Duck's packaging design is more conservative.

Compared to IRVINS's potato chips, The Golden Duck's chips are thinner. But the crunchiness wasn't as great as IRVINS. More over the salted egg yolk is quite lumpy and powdery, not evenly coated on chips.

The Golden Duck's salted egg fish skin. My first attempt of fish skin was at Black Society restaurant. It's addictive even without the flavour of salted egg yolk.

The texture of salted egg fish skin was good on average. Like its potato chips, the salted egg yolk is not evenly coated on fish skin as well. The taste was predictable, didn't give me much surprise.

Between IRVINS and The Golden Duck's salted egg potato chips, I vote a credit to IRVINS. In terms of price, The Golden Duck is cheaper. However, this snack is categorised as high price. Not everyone can afford to buy it for party nor self-consumption. Will just give it a try or buy as a gift for family members.

Fatty Cheong's 肥仔祥 Char Siew & Tong Fong Fatt's 東風發 Chicken Rice @ABC Brickworks, Singapore

Address: 6, Jalan Bukit Merah, 150006 Singapore

Last day in Singapore, my friend brought me to ABC Brickworks Food Centre for brunch. Without knowing what's good here, I made a few rounds browsing what I want to have. And my friend's husband queued at Fatty Cheong for its char siew and roast pork. I made 2 - 3 rounds, couldn't decide. Thought of ordering the prawn noodles but front store seemed like closing. My friend recommended the Hainanese boneless chicken rice at the corner stall. There was a queue too. I decided to give it a try.

Fatty Cheong's charcoal-grilled char siew, it has the perfect proportion of fat and lean meat. Drenched in the black gravy that tastes slightly sweet. The meat was juicy and not hard to chew. It goes well with rice.

One of my favourites, roast pork. The skin was crackling crispy. Slightly dry but soft, the taste was good.

Hainanese boneless chicken rice from Tong Fong Fatt. I just found out it has branches islandwide. I have not had chicken rice for sometime. I try not to have chicken rice when there's other option. In Singapore, you won't go wrong with chicken rice. As expected, this chicken rice from Tong Fong Fatt was also a great choice. I was impressed with its quality of rice.  The rice was fragrant, every rice grain filled with chicken essence evenly. A good plate of Hainanese chicken rice, should examine the rice first. I detest to see the lumpy rice.

I asked for drumstick part. The meat was flavourful and tender. Most importantly, it was boneless.

Next week I'll be travelling to Taiwan with my mum. Guess I might not able to update my blog until mid April. But I shall be able to post in my IG. If you are interested to found out what I have been up to in Taiwan, just follow my IG account @igomakan.

Tai Cheong Bakery 泰昌饼家 @Holland Village, Singapore

Address: 31, Lorong Liput, Singapore 277742
Business hours: Monday - Friday 10am - 10pm, Saturday - Sunday 9am - 11pm

After dinner at Sushi Tei, my friend brought me here to get the egg tart from Tai Cheong Bakery at Holland Village. Tai Cheong Bakery from Hong Kong is famous for its egg tart. As we just had our dinner, we didn't plan to dine in. There was a short queue when we arrived.

Their egg tarts are selling fast. The quantity is limited, so have to grab fast while stock lasts.

The menu for dine-in. Their signatures are Egg Tart, Durian & Cheese Tart, Coconut Tart and Chicken Pie. One piece of egg tart, priced at S$1.90.

The interior design is typical cha chaan teng setting like those in Hong Kong.

Egg tart (S$1.90) and coconut tart (S$2.50).  This silky egg custard texture was indeed very soft and rich. Not overly sweet. The crust was solid and buttered fragrant. Whereas the fillings of coconut tart was moist and loose when you bite.

On my next visit, I would want to try out their macaroni soup with luncheon meat and polo bun.

Yon Yan Fried Chicken Wings 永炎炸鸡翼 @West Coast Market Square, Singapore

Address: 726 Clementi West Street 2, Singapore 120726
Business hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11:00am - 2:00pm; 5:00pm - 8:30pm (Sunday & Monday off)

Visit Singapore, there's one thing I do not want to miss, the fried chicken wings. I tried the fried chicken wings at Eng Kee in 2015, this time my friend brought me to try out Yon Yan's fried chicken wings. Their fried chicken wings became even more famous after Singapore PM Lee had queued to buy. It was previously operating at Redhill Food Centre, moved to West Coast Market Square after sometime.

Fried chicken wing, luncheon meat, sausage, fish cake, ngoh hiang (spiced meat roll), and fried bee hoon. Which one you can resist not to have?

While my friend's husband was queueing to get the chicken wings, we made a round to hunt for other popular food.

There have halal food stalls as well. This particular stall front had long line with all races, should be exceptionally nice?

This stall also had long queue.

My friend queued at 合記 He Ji Braised Duck Rice Porridge Noodle.

My friend ordered their signature kueh chap and braised duck kueh tiaw. This usually not my favourite but the tastes were great. The kueh chap is different from our version in Kuching. The broth was thicker but quite a let down as it was not really hot when served. Overall the broth was flavourful, slightly sweet. The duck meat was tender and well-braised.

Dang dang! The vendor always presented the chicken wings so neatly, making it even more appealing. We ordered half dozen of chicken wings. The size was equally large, and cost only $1.40. The chicken wings were fried evenly, you can't find the chicken wings with darker nor lighter colour tone. The batter was thin on the skin, it had mild flavour but utterly crispy and crunchy. Even though the meat inside was slightly bland but it was guaranteed juicy. Totally satisfied with this plate of chicken wings.

What's the best match with the fried chicken wings? Needless to mention, it's the fried bee hoon. It might looks simple, the flavour was mild in taste. Therefore you need the spicy sambal belacan to go with it.

Durian Pancake @Durian History, Chinatown, Singapore

Address: Durian History, 1 Park Rd, Singapore 059108

Many years ago my first visit to Chinatown, this durian pancake was very popular back then. The durian puree was thick in taste and the pancake itself was crispy. I was impressed with the good taste of it. Many years later my friend brought me here for foot massage so we also got ourselves durian pancake each.

Regular size of pancake costs $2.50, jumbo size $3.80.

The durian pancake is made fresh per order.

The durian puree was still cold when served, the texture was slightly grainy when chewing. But this time the durian aroma was not as great, the puree was not soft and less sweet.

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle 大華猪肉粿條面, Singapore

Address: 466 Crawford Lane, #01-12, Singapore 190465
Business hours: Monday - Sunday 9:30am - 9:00pm (Rest on first and third Monday)

Last month I made a prompt decision to visit my friend in Singapore. My friend asked me to list down the food I want to try out. So this Bak Chor Mee (BCM) is one of the food in my list. After landed and dropped my luggage at home, we came to Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle for the famous BCM. They gained a Michelin Star prestige in 2016, that accolade made them so popular internationally. We reached there and lined up at 10:53am, the queue was still considered short. When it was our turn to order, the time hit 12:05pm. Quite a number of the customers are tourists, and there were customers ordered takeaways too. An hour wait was quite unpleasant because it was quite hot and stuffy.

Finally our turn to order. They have 3 sizes of portion, $5, $8 and $10. Since we have waited an hour for this, I want to have the bigger portion so that I don't feel regret later. I went for $8 and my friend's $5.

This bowl of BCM is plentiful. The ingredients include dumplings, meatballs, pork slices, pork liver, minced meat, and fried fish slices. The BCM accompanied with a bowl of soup too. The alkaline taste of the soup was quite overwhelming. The noodle was cooked to perfection, neither too hard nor too soft, springy, mild spicy and tangy in taste. But the alkaline aroma was rather strong. The pork liver was soft and still red in colour, I was quite hesitated to eat it at first because it's not fully cooked. I like the dumplings, and the minced meat tastes great with the sauce.

Overall this bowl of BCM is indeed worth the one hour wait but I don't think I want to queue again since I have tried it.

Fried Chicken Wings at Eng Kee, Singapore

Address: 118 Commonwealth Crescent, Singapore 140118

My friend told me that Eng Kee's fried chicken wings taste better than Two Wings's. So on the same day I got another chance to try out different fried chicken wings.

Look at the wings. The appearance says it all. Golden brown skin, the colour is so even. Most importantly its taste is really awesome! It is well marinated, and not so salty. I don't like fried chicken wings coated with thick herbs flour. This chicken wing is the one I truly like. You can taste the crispy skin and the meat inside is so juicy. No regret.

An uncle who's the helper for Eng Kee had a chit chat with us. Apparently the previous owner of Eng Kee has moved to Redhill Market. Ok, this will be another reason for me to go back again. Thumbs up!

Fried Chicken Wings at Two Wings, Singapore

Address: 119 Bukit Merah Lane 1, Singapore 151119
Website: http://www.twowings.com.sg/

I visited Singapore in January. Stayed for a couple of days. My buddy in Singapore had been bugging me what food I would like to try in Singapore and she can't wait for my visit. As you know, there are lots of international cuisines available in Singapore, I would like to have something taste more local. Excluded chicken rice and bak ku teh, as I don't feel like it. My first thought was chicken wings and Katong laksa. Googled "the best chicken wings in Singapore", and I found this link is on top of the result: http://www.thesmartlocal.com/read/best-chicken-wings.

So Two Wings is one of the best chicken wings in the list. My friend brought me there, it was quite hard to find a parking lot during lunch break hours. After a few rounds of searching for parking, we gave up and decided to go back later. We went back around 2.30pm. It was raining, bringing in our umbrella to the hawker center and was told by a lady to leave our umbrella outside "rudely". Ok, fine. It's a good practice to keep the premise clean too. We ordered take-away, 4 pieces and was asked to come back later for pick up.

Their menu on the wall. If you are queuing, you can look at the menu on the wall first and then it won't take long for you to decide when it is your turn.

Here is our chicken wings

Quite a huge chicken wing. Mouth watering when seeing this picture.

Ok, I have to say the taste is not up to my expectation, and it is over statement. No doubt, the chicken wings are crispy but the meat is tasteless. I don't think it's marinated. Just the coatings look nice. My friend and I concluded that it was not worth to have second visit again. The box written "one just isn't enough!". Well, both of us agreed "one is just enough for me". I'll blog Eng Kee's fried chicken wing next. Stay tuned.
