Noodle Experts 麵匠 @Kenyalang Park, Kuching

Address: Lot 10716, Kenyalang Park Shopping Centre, Jalan Sim Kheng Hong, Wisma Lai Suee Yian, 93300 Kuching, Sarawak
Business hours: Monday - Sunday 6:30am - 1:00pm

Have not updated my blog for some time as I had no time to try out other places. Usually had quick meal at place which was convenient to go. I have not been to Noodle Experts for long time. My old post of Noodle Experts was published in 2013.

I ordered the Mee Pok Set (RM8.00). The soup contains shrimp, pork liver, fish ball, meatball, 3-layer pork slices, beancurds and veges. The taste was flavourful, fresh ingredients and big portion. It's good that they used the freshly fried red onions, not the commercial pack which you can get off-the-shelf.

The noodle served was kolo mee, not mee pok (I asked for two mee pok sets). The noodle was tasted alright, not as aromatic and flavourful as the branch at Jalan Song. But I was quite pleased with its fried lard.

Soon Huat Coffee Cafe 顺發咖啡小食館 @Jalan Batu Lintang, Kuching

Address: No. 12, Jalan Batu Lintang, 93200 Kuching, Sarawak.
Business hours: Monday - Sunday 6:00am - 6:00pm

The other day wanted to have the kolo mee at Joo Seng Cafe, but it was too full. So we randomly chose a coffeeshop nearby. Settled our brunch at Soon Huat Coffee Cafe. It was totally out of my expectation, the taste was not bad too.

Mix pork soup with noodles. The soup is flavourful because of its ingredients which contained taufu, meat balls, pork mince meat, pork liver, pork intestines, etc.

A closer look of the soup.

Ordered a bowl of kolo mee too. The texture was springy but rather dry.

Kim Joo 锦裕, Kuching

Address: Jalan Ewe Hai, Kuching
Business hours: 6:30am - 2:00pm (closed on 1st and 15th every month)

Besides Noodle Descendents, Kim Joo is another place well-known coffee shop for cheng / zheng. They not only serve cheng, they also have fried rice, tomato kueh tiaw, etc. So you can try different menus at the same time. I will recommend you tomato kueh tiaw or mee, as this is one of the Kuching specialties.

Their menu:

Cheng / zheng soup. The soup is clear. Full of bean spouts aroma and salted vege.

The noodle is the best. Not over cooked, very chewy. If you are not keen to try their cheng soup, you can order kolo mee.

Tomato kueh tiaw. Normally they fry the kueh tiaw first, then cook the ingredients with sauce separately. Once done, spread it onto the kueh tiaw. For mee version, they will deep fry the noodle first. I prefer tomato mee because it is crispy, I don't normally soak in the tomato sauce too long.

Cucumber juice. They also have kedondong juice. Best beverage to drink on a hot day.

Kim Joo has limited seats. I think the peak hours is between 9:00am to 1:00pm on weekends. Choose your timing right then you don't have to wait too long to be seated.

Location: Wisma Lai Swee Yian, Lot 10716, Section 64, Kenyalang, 93050 Kuching, Sarawak (enter from the junction next to Kenyalang Shell Station and go straight)

The kolo mee here has been crowned as one of the best kolo mee in town. It has branch at Jalan Song, but in term of service the main branch is a lot better.

The portion is quite petty for me. One bowl costs RM5.00. You can choose the ingredients you want, seafood or pork intestines or both.

At here you can order "Zheng" too.

Noodle Descendents

There is one famous dish called "Zheng" or "Cheng" in Kuching, which is pork innards soup that comes with noodle separately. Every Kuchingite knows this "Zheng" place at Bishopgate and their 3-wait principles: wait for car park (as it's not easy to find car park at that area), wait for seat (the capacity of the shop is limited, you will have to avoid going there during breakfast and lunch break. You won't feel good as someone is standing behind you waiting for you to finish your meal), wait for them to take order and food to be served (yes, you can't go to them direct. They will not entertain you. Wait patiently for them to come to you first). But quite sometime ago they has moved to Padungan Road (August 2012), with their new name: Noodle Descendents. The crowd still remain the same. You will notice how they have been loved by Kuchingites all these 56 years (they founded in 1957), that reminds me of the Digi advertisement song last time: "I will follow you, follow you wherever you may go.."

Check out their Facebook Page here: https://www.facebook.com/NoodleDescendents. Tips: Avoid peak hours and don't go with empty stomach as you might have to wait 1 hour for the food to be served during peak hours. It really puts your patience to the test.
