Hakka Lei Cha @Green Road 海南村客家擂茶, Kuching

Address: 149, Jalan Pisang Barat, Sin Sin Park, 93150 Kuching, Sarawak
Business hours: Monday - Saturday 10:00am - 2:00pm (Sunday off)

I have not been here for long long time.. as it's quite far from my place. But I always remember this place is where the first time I had leicha in my life. And I started to enjoy eating leicha after the first encounter. My mother started to appreciate leicha not long ago so I brought her here to try out the one in my top list of leicha in Kuching.

The ingredients are freshly prepared. I had the big bowl, seriously love its green soup. The taste was still great as usual. Usually the vendor will ask you if you want bitter taste or less. I personally prefer the bitter version of soup.

Hainanese Chicken Rice 理想海南鸡饭 @New King Wood Cafe 新金屋茶室, Bintulu

Address: No. 46, Ground Floor, Jln Abang Galau, New Commercial Centre, Sarawak, 97000 Bintulu, Sarawak (Next to Mastama Inn)

I was back to Bintulu my hometown last month. In Bintulu, you can find nice kampua and Foochow fried noodles. Limited food choice for lunch, and this Hainanese chicken rice is my brothers' favourite. They say it's the best chicken rice they ever had. The previous vendor has sold his secret recipe to the existing vendor, so the taste still remained the same. I have been there before, but I'm not really a fan of chicken rice so to be honest..  I can't tell the difference, except the chicken rice in Bangkok.

Overall the chicken rice was taste great. The meat was moist and medium soft, a plus point with a small bowl of soup. You can only order stir-fried vegetables so at least you will have a balanced meal.

Suukee The Original Hainanese Chicken Rice @Jalan Song, Kuching

Address: Lot 11376, Jalan Song, Tabuan Height Phase 7, Tabuan Heights, 93350 Kuching, Sarawak
Business hours: Monday - Sunday 8:00am - 9:00pm

Suukee The Original Hainanese Chicken Rice is located behind Top 10 Food Court at Jalan Song. Every time passed by the restaurant, the business seemed good. That day we didn't really have choice since it was late noon, so we patronized the chicken rice shop.

The menu. The price is slightly on the high side because of the atmosphere.

I ordered the original Hainan steamed chicken rice, RM8.80. The chicken meat appeared bloody, apparently it was undercooked.

My bro had the signature Hainan curry rice with roasted chicken. Same price at RM8.80. I thought the original chicken rice should be cheaper?

Also ordered a set of kaya butter toast, RM3.80.

When we were in the restaurant, the noise made mostly by the staffs who played and joked around. It's good that their relationship among colleague is maintained friendly but not appropriate to make noise in front of the customers. The girl (who assisted as the senior cashier was away) was really bad at math, even a simple calculation. Be watchful, have to double check if your change is correct.

319 Chin Siang Seafood @Hock Kui Commercial Centre, Kuching

Address: 3125 - 3126, Lrg Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce 20, Hock Kui Commercial Centre, 93150 Kuching, Sarawak
Business hours: Wednesday - Monday 10:30am - 10:00pm (Every Tuesday off)

The day landed in Kuching from Taiwan trip, my bro brought us here for dinner. The location is not so noticeable because its location is not facing main road. It's quite risky to open a restaurant here though. Unless someone has spread the word and recommended it, otherwise I don't think I would ever find out there's a restaurant there.

Butter prawns, this one was good. The butter sauce was thick enough and flavourful.

Sea cucumber soup, this is usually the soup we would order whenever we dine out.

Stir-fried kangkung (water spinach) with garlic. This was good, usually we get the kangkung stir-fried with garlic, and they have this deep-fried garlic on top. Awesome.

This is my bro's favourite, crabs with egg. I like crabs too but not as much as him. Usually it takes me long time to extract the crab meat and end up I lost appetite to finish my bowl of rice.

The first visit was good, and I got quite impressed with the food quality here. However, the second visit we got a let down. The steamed grouper fish smelled so fishy and too rough in texture. Usually the boss will be honest with you if the fish is fresh or not ok. But for some reasons, that grouper fish was really not ok for us. Price wise, quite reasonable. The service was good, served the food fast. It's a good place to bring big family or guests here for lunch or dinner.

Yo Yo Cafe 摇摇冰咖啡室 @Parkcity Commerce Square, Bintulu

Address: No. 358, Survey Lot 4017, Jalan Diwarta, Phase 5, Parkcity Commerce Square, 97000 Bintulu, Sarawak.
Business hours: Monday - Saturday 8:00am - 5:30pm (Sunday Off)

If you are hungry in late noon in Bintulu, Yo Yo Cafe is a good place to have tea break. They have assorted of traditional kuih muih, curry puff, you tiao, popiah, steamed buns, nasi lemak, etc.

I missed this place because of its yo yo shaved ice. There's no other place that serve this kind of shaved ice. So far I have not found one yet in Bintulu and Kuching. Different from Taiwan shaved ice, Yo Yo's shaved ice is slightly coarse. The choice of flavours is quite limited, red bean, sweet corn, lychee, and sour plum.

Makan-makan the best in Bintulu

The best place to have supper in Bintulu, Spring Garden Cafe. These are what we normally would order at Spring Garden. Pork innards, stir-fried kangkong with garlic, deep-fried chicken feet, cockles.

The best kampua, Stall No. 52 at Pasar Utama Bintulu. The noodles are handmade by themselves.

The best beef noodle soup, Yee Chwan Cafe.

Among all, mother's homecook is still the best.

Fam's 范圆 @Jalan Song, Kuching

Location: Jalan Song, Tabuan Heights, Kuching (Next to Noodle Expert)
Business hours: (update later)

Sorry for not updating my blog last week as I am more cautious with my food intake now. Cut down carbo and sugar intake. Don't have much healthy choice when I choose to dine out. This place has been my regular place for brunch on Monday. A brunch for two pax, generally within RM20 including drinks (1 meat, 1 soup with veges, 2 white rice). Not the cheapest but compared to the last regular place, this place is still within our budget.

There have variety of dishes to choose from. Our favourite combination is always salted fish pork and ABC pork ribs soup. Black pepper pork rice is also not bad as it comes with fried egg.

There also have dumplings. Tastes not bad too.

This is the ABC soup, RM6.50 including rice. Contains white radish, carrot, pork ribs, potato and corn.

Salted fish pork. This is my bro's favourite. It goes well with rice, trust me.

The white radish soup. The pork ribs in the soup is not hard to chew. If you want to go for healthier lunch, you can opt this.

Hakka salt-baked chicken. Every time I came here, this dish always out of stock as the vendor only prepared it with limited quantity. Recently the vendor has increased the quantity so we managed to try it out. Unlike the ordinary chicken rice, the chicken meat is slightly dry, no water added because it's baked with salt. It tastes delicious though. Worth to have a try.

I have to use Noodle Expert's map for the time being as Fam's has not reviewed in Google map yet.

Chop Hing Huong 興園餐室 & Xiu Long (Sibu) Confectionery 小龍餅家, Sibu

Address: 2-40, Jalan Tukang Besi, Pekan Sibu, 96000 Sibu, Sarawak.
Business Hours: I have no idea of its business hours. It opened every time I visited. Early morning till late noon, even evening time. Not sure they are still operating at evening time?

I lost my aunt in February, flew back to Sibu to attend the funeral. Before getting ourselves busy with the guests, we must fill our stomach first. We rarely skip to have the famous ding bian hu 鼎边糊 every time we visit Sibu. I think Sibu Municipal Council has done a good job, the alley got "visibly" cleaner. And there is "Dian Mian Hu" mural on the wall. The picture looks familiar to me, I compared it to my previous post of Chop Hing Huong, it is actually identical. Now I realised the reason Sibu Municipal Council emailed me for permission to use the photo.

The photo Sibu Municipal Council asked for permission to use. Looks exactly the same right? The pails, drinking glass, pots, kettle, and the vendor with the same shirt, apron and pants, at the same angle. The mural artwork is finished by the artist named Braden Tiong. Hmm, same surname as mine. Haaha..

The day we visited Chop Hing Huong but we sat at the coffee shop opposite. If you came here and found out no seat available, don't worry.. there's plenty of seats available at the coffee shop opposite. Different owner but you are allowed to order outside food as long as you order drinks from them.

My big bowl of ding bian hu and a bottle of soda cream manufactured in Sibu. My another aunt told me that she prefers the other ding bian hu near Sibu Civic Centre, which is operated by a sibling of the owners of Chop Hing Huong. I ever tried the ding bian hu that she mentioned too, both are equally good. But my parents prefer to visit the old place, me too.. so that I can buy the egg cakes from the next door.

I have tried a lot of egg cakes (kuih bahulu) in the past.. and none is as delicious as Xiu Long's. Seriously it is superb springy and full of egg yoke aroma. It's a must buy item for me. I can have 4 pieces continuously, or even more than 5 if my mum didn't stop me. No joke. If not mistaken, 3 pieces at RM1. I bought RM5, not enough still since I had to share it with others. Next time I must buy a lot for self consumption.

The variety of Foochow pastries that are only available in Sibu.

Laksa House 我来也茶室 @Parkcity Commercial Square, Bintulu

Address: 75, Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi, Parkcity Commercial Square, 97000 Bintulu, Sarawak.
Business hours: Tuesday - Sunday 7am - 1pm (might sold out earlier)

In Bintulu, there are two types of food has distinctive taste. One is the beef noodles and another one is the laksa. I never had the beef noodles and laksa in Kuching that taste similar like those in Bintulu. There are three places in Bintulu served the best laksa, and Laksa House is one of them. Laksa House has been awarded a few times as the best cleanest coffee shop in Bintulu. And there were beauty pageant contestants ever visited here too.

Laksa is prepared at the entrance. Other than laksa, they also have kolo mee. I never try their kolo mee so I can't give any comment. Majority of the customers come here for laksa.

This is the big bowl of laksa. Bigger shrimps and bigger portion. The ratio of the coconut milk and laksa paste is well balanced. The taste of coconut milk is neither too strong or light.

They produced their own belacan sauce, it is good match with the cooked shrimps. The beehoon (rice vermicelli) they used is also thinner compared to the laksa in Kuching. I can't remember how much is the big bowl of laksa cost, RM7.50?

Spring Garden Cafe, Bintulu

Address: No. 268, Taman Sri Dagang, 97000 Bintulu
Business hours: 5pm something till dawn.

I have post the famous chicken feet at Spring Garden Cafe before, click here. And, these are the dishes we normally ordered at Spring Garden Cafe in Bintulu. Though the appearance doesn't look appetizing. But I can assure you that every dish is amazingly delicious, it goes well with rice.

Cockles, my favourite. I rarely fail to skip this dish whenever we have meal here.

Stir-fried kangkong (water spinach).

Mixed vegetables soup.

Pork intestine and ear.

For some reasons, we never change our mind to try out other dishes here. Maybe it embodies our childhood memories in it. It was our happiest moment when my parents brought us out for dinner.
