Salahuddin Bakery, Johor Bahru

Location: No. 26, Jalan Dhoby, 80000 Johor Bahru
GPS: 1.456915, 103.763428

Another notable place to visit in Johor Bahru is Salahuddin Bakery at Jalan Dhoby, just within the neighborhood area with Hiap Joo and Hua Mui. This bakery looks very 'antique', it's very rare to see this mosaic floor now.

What is famous at Salahuddin Bakery? Its Karipap aka curry puff. The shape of curry puff from Salahuddin Bakery is different, it's in triangle shape. Aside Karipap, they also have buns and cookies.

The famous Karipap Daging RM1.70. I thought it's beef fillings, it's mutton actually.

I kept the karipaps until the next morning for breakfast.

The sugar coated pastry attracted me so I bought it as well. But this would taste a lot nicer when served hot. The crispiness is a lot deteriorated over the night.

The layered crust is noticeable. Again, this would taste nicer while hot. After a night, the crust was not crispy enough, rather dry and hard.

I bought one Karipap Ayam and Karipap Daging. Karipap Daging tastes nicer compared to chicken meat.

Restoran Hua Mui 华美茶餐室, Johor Bahru

Location: 131, Jalan Trus, 80000 Johor Bahru
GPS: 1.457355,103.764356
Business hours: Daily 7:30am to 7:30pm
Certified Halal

Restoran Hua Mui serves Hainanese food in JB, which I found it on google results, been blogged about by many Malaysian food bloggers. After I bought the banana cake, decided to try out its Hainanese chicken chop (despite I was still feeling full). And not only chicken chop, I also ordered their kaya toast. Okay, I have to admit I'm quite "ambitious" at times and I have to finish all by myself. Normally I dine alone, so if you noticed a lady having her meal alone, don't have to pity her (give her a "oh so kolian" look) because we enjoy to eat alone sometimes. Aputhen, do we have to starve ourselves to death if we don't have a company to eat? Lol

Weekday late noon, at 3 something, still full house. Attractive food menu on the wall.

Upstairs should have more seat available.

Their menu:

My coffee, very thick and rich indeed. This cup is so antique.. very Hainanese style.

My kaya toast. Tastes ok to me, I think Yeow Kee in Kuching has better taste than this. Yeow Kee also uses charcoal.

My Hainanese chicken chop is finally served. Can't resist the fried chicken chop. Yum yum. Tastes different from Yut Kee in KL. But I would prefer this crispy version of chicken chop. Less gravy but sinful.

I finished all the food I ordered without any leftover. Left the shop with deep guilt. Obviously exceeded the daily quota of calories but would not have regret to have it. Too bad I couldn't try its fried noodles, it looks very appetizing too. Saw the customer next table having it, mouth watering. Nevermind... will visit Restoran Hua Mui again in the future.

Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory 协裕面包西菓厂, Johor Bahru

Location: 13, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, 8000 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/hiapjoobakery

I went to JB (Johor Bahru) last month. Managed to try some good food as recommended by bloggers. Banana cake from Hiap Joo Bakery is one in the list. I was quite skeptical about it at first, "banana cake" sounds so ordinary. There must be a reason why it's so famous right. Too bad, only banana cake was available by the time I got there. I just bought the banana cake and walked around that area. There is another famous Hainanese shop, Restoran Hua Mui located in the same area, which I'm going to blog in the next post.

Excuse for the blurred photo. I only managed to take one shoot. The staff is packing the banana cakes, the customers are continuously coming in to buy.

The banana cake was freshly baked. Steaming hot. Smelled very nice too. I wanted to retain some stomach space for Hua Mui so I didn't have it until the next morning.

The next morning, it looks perfect still. Doubt, will it taste the same over the night?

I had the first bite. Now I 100% agreed it's the best banana cake I ever had. The texture is bouncily soft, moist and smooth. The banana aroma will make you one bite after another. Gosh, I gonna miss it now.

Lesson learned. Don't judge the book from its cover. Though banana cake sounds nothing special but you gotta have it before you judge it. This is the food I would miss in JB among the rest.

Lei Cha at Big Mouth Food Centre 大嘴巴擂茶

Location: Jalan Dogan, Kuching, Sarawak

Lately been busying with new website construction. Didn't have time to update this blog. A lot materials still pending, hope I would have time next week to upload some posts.

This is another post of Hakka leicha. Besides the leicha at Jalan Pisang Barat 海南村客家擂茶, this is another famous one in town. For me, the taste is different. Some prefer 海南村客家擂茶, some prefer 大嘴巴擂茶. It's all up to personal preference. Both soup is nice but 海南村客家擂茶 is thicker and bitter. Bitter the better actually. It's good to have leicha once in a while for detox purpose.

A pack of peanuts is served separately. If you are allergic to peanut, you can skip this. I like small size peanuts, it is crunchier.

The herbs soup. If you prefer bitter taste, you can request them to add more bitterness.

Brown rice. Chew it with herb soup, fantastic taste!

A small bowl of this costs RM4.50. They cooked the leicha fresh, noticed they constantly stir fried the veges. Some leicha sellers prepare the ingredients early which you can see the soup turns more yellowish when served, it actually reduces the appetizing look. This is the leicha I normally would visit because of the driving distance is nearer.
